(ANSA-AFP) - WARSAW, JAN 4 - Polish farmers on Thursday
resumed their blockade of a border checkpoint with Ukraine as a
similar protest by hauliers disrupted cargo traffic between the
two countries. Truckers and farmers have been blocking the
border for nearly two months, complaining that unfair
competition from Ukrainian peers had dented their earnings.
"After a break for the Christmas period, this morning we resumed
blocking the Medyka border post" as there had been no written
guarantees from the Polish government, the leader of the
farmers' protest Roman Kondrow told AFP, adding that the action
would continue until February 3. Polish farmers claim grain
prices have been depressed by Ukrainian imports and have asked
the government for subsidies and low-interest loans. Three other
border crossings have been blocked for cargo traffic since early
November as the hauliers say no solution to the dispute has been
found. (ANSA-AFP).
