The European Commission "closely
monitors" the Ukrainian wheat situation and maintains "constant
contact" with Bulgaria, Poland, Slovakia, Hungary, and Romania
"to find a solution" and "ensure that the grain can leave
Ukraine." This was stated by a spokesperson for the EU executive
in response to questions regarding the request of Eastern
countries to extend the export restrictions on wheat, corn,
rapeseed, and sunflower seeds from Ukraine beyond September 15
on their respective territories. "It is premature to predict
what will occur after September 15th. We are aware of Poland's
requests," the spokeswoman said, noting that Poland has
threatened to cease wheat imports if the EU does not respond.
