Latvia plans to remove Russian from school subjects

From the 2026-27 school year

(ANSA) - VILNIUS, NOV 21 - Russian may no longer be taught in schools in Latvia, the Ministry of Education in Riga announced.

According to the provisions of the School Reform Program public, from the 2026/27 school year, all schools across the country will have to offer the teaching of one of the languages of European Union countries or a foreign language regulated by a bilateral educational agreement.

The provision effectively ousts Russian from the most widely-taught languages in the Latvian educational system.

According to a representative of the Ministry of Education, the new norms aim at the full integration of youth in the academic area of the European Union, as well as contributing to the learning of a language of the EU by paving the way for more significant employment opportunities within and outside the Union. According to official data, in 2021, Russian was the foreign language taught in more almost half of the schools across the country. (ANSA).
