Pope Francis on Wednesday renewed his
appeal for peace in the Middle East and said he hoped the truce
in Gaza would continue.
"Please, let us continue to pray for the very serious situation in Israel and Palestine. Peace please, peace," insisted the pope at the end of his general audience, having earlier said he was "still not well" with 'flu and asking Monsignor Filippo Ciampanelli of the Secretariate of State to read the catechesis and greet the faithful on his behalf.
"I hope that the truce in Gaza continues, so that all the hostages might be released and access to the necessary humanitarian aid might still be allowed," he continued.
"I have spoken to the parish there, there is no water, there is no bread, people are suffering. It is the simple people, not those who are waging war, who are suffering. We call for peace," appealed the pope.
