Pope Francis told his weekly general
audience in the Vatican Wednesday that he was thinking of people
who had taken their own lives after losing their jobs.
"In these times of pandemic many people have lost work, we know,
and some of them, crushed by an unbearable weight, have reached
the point of taking their own lives.
"I should like to remember each one of them and their families
today".
Francis urged the faithful to observe "a moment of silence
remembering those men and women who were desperate because they
couldn't find work".
The pontiff added: "Governments should give everyone a chance to
earn their daily bread".
