Eritrean rider Biniam Girmay on
Wednesday pulled out of the Giro d'Italia after making history
as the first Black African to win a grand tour stage when he
came in first in the 10th stage at Jesi in Marche Tuesday.
Girmay was hit in the left eye by a spumante cork while
celebrating his historic triumph.
"Thanks to my team, to all the staff for their support they gave
me before and after yesterday's incredible stage", Girmay said
in a short video message on the Twitter account of his team
Intermachè-Wanty-Gobert.
In the video, the eye is not bandaged and appears in relatively
OK condition.
Girmay said he was sad at having to withdraw but happy that the
accident did not have more serious consequences.
"Arrivederci presto", the message concluded.
