Italian Foreign Minister Luigi Di Maio
had a telephone conversation Wednesday with his Iranian
counterpart Hossein Amirabdollahian, Iramian state news agency
IRNA said.
IRNA did not cite the case of Alessia Piperno, the Italian
citizen recently arrested in Tehran.
Piperno, the 30-year-old Roman woman detained in Iran last week,
is being held at Tehran's Evin prison, sources said on Tuesday.
The woman is thought to have been detained on September 28,
which was her birthday.
Iran has launched a massive wave of arrests following the
outbreak of street protests related to the death in custody of
22-year-old Kurdish woman Mahsa Amini after she was held by
'morality police' for allegedly breaching the Islamic republic's
dress code.
"We are very worried. Unfortunately, the situation is not good,"
Alberto Piperno, the woman's father, told ANSA on Monday. "We
are in contact with the foreign ministry's crisis unit, which
has activated all the relevant procedures".
Piperno said that he had had a telephone call from his daughter
from a Tehran prison on Sunday.
