Carlo Fuortes, former Rome opera
chief, ex Rai state broadcaster CEO, former Rome Casa della
Musica head and current head of Naples' San Carlo opera house,
the oldest in the world, was named superintendent of Florence's
iconic Maggio Musicale (Musical May) classical music festival on
Tuesday, sources said, although the culture ministry later said
there had not been any official communication of the
appointment.
Fuortes, 64, began his term as San Carlo superintendent last
September.
The Rome-born cultural manager left Rai last May citing
disagreements with new government policy and appointments at the
broadcaster.
His appointment as Maggio chief was reporetdly made by Florence
Mayor Gennaro Sangiuliano, Florence Mayor Dario Nardella, and
other top cultural officials in the Tuscan capital.
But the ministry said: "The Ministry of Culture has received no
official and formal communication regarding the appointment of
Carlo Fuortes as Superintendent of the Maggio Fiorentino.
"It is first necessary to acquire the acts and read them.
"It is surprising how quickly Fuortes' name was spread, hoping
that the analysis was accurate and thorough".
Ministry sources, explained that the ministry will carefully
verify the perimeter of its powers.
