A 60-year-old worker from San Marzano
near Taranto was electrocuted while concrete was being poured to
cover some pipes at the construction site of the new
superhighway that will connect Taranto to Avetrana in northern
Puglia on Tuesday, the latest in a spate of workplace accident
deaths in Italy.
According to an initial reconstruction, the upper part of the
man's vehicle, from which the cement was pouring, touched the
high voltage overhead cables, causing the man's death.
The man died instantly.
Trade unions have protested at the high rate of accidental
workplace deaths and successive governments have taken action.
