"The new fronts that are
unfortunately heating up must not cause us to overlook the need
to channel efforts and energy into resolving existing problems
or approaching the international crisis quadrants in which we
are investing with a view to stabilisation," said Stefania
Craxi, president of the Senate Foreign Affairs and Defence
Commission. "The discussion is primarily aimed at the Balkan
region, which represents an absolute and renewed priority for
Italy, and must represent an absolute and renewed priority for
Europe, especially in this troubled time," Craxi added. She also
announced a meeting to be held on Friday 13 October in Trieste,
with the presidents of the parliamentary delegations of the
member countries of the Central European Initiative (CEI).
