Ports: Trieste, natural alternative to the Black Sea corridor

President D'Agostino, 'we could upgrade transalpine pipeline'

25 May, 22:05
(ANSA) - TRIESTE, MAY 25 - "Today, the Black Sea has become quite difficult to navigate because some ports are closed, and mines have been placed in some areas. Moreover, we have seen an alarming increase from the point of view of insurance costs.

Whoever enters the Black Sea today has a major cost burden.

Trieste, and the whole North Adriatic Sea, becomes a normal, natural alternative to that corridor." So said Zeno D'Agostino, president of the Eastern Adriatic Sea Port System Authority, on the sidelines of a meeting in Trieste, responding to a question about the role of the Port of Trieste in the face of the war in Ukraine.

"Some say that we cannot depend on infrastructure that can be managed and closed by Russia. Hence the pipeline becomes a perfect alternative to these supplies. It is important to have infrastructure that is not governed by entities that can make drastic decisions against us at this time." The president of the Eastern Adriatic Sea Port System Authority said when asked to comment on a possible expansion of the transalpine pipeline connecting the port of Trieste to Central Europe.
