(ANSA) - BELGRADE, JAN 11 - The gross weight of goods handled
in the European Union's principal ports decreased by 17.0% in
the 2nd quarter of 2020 compared to the same quarter of 2019,
reaching 755 million tonnes, Eurostat said today. Only two EU
countries reported an increase in tonnes of goods handled in
their ports, with Croatia reporting a substantial increase in
main port activity in the period (+10.2%). Estonia slightly
increased by 0.6%. In contrast, the largest decrease was
observed in Malta (-50.8%), followed by Italy (-40.5%), Latvia
(-32.8%), Portugal (-22.6%) and Slovenia (-20.1%).
"This substantial fall can most probably be attributed to the
COVID-19 pandemic and the subsequent restrictions put in place
in the EU and worldwide," the EU statistical office noted.
