Austria closes 45 crossings with Slovakia and the Czech Rep.

Due to sharp increase in Covid cases in neighboring countries

(ANSA) - TRIESTE, 13 GEN - BOLZANO / BOZEN, JANUARY 13 - Austria is about to close 45 minor border crossings towards the Czech Republic and Slovakia from midnight due to a sharp increase in the pandemic in both neighboring countries.

Interior Minister Karl Nehammer's measure aims at the "maintenance of public order and security." According to APA, in the Czech Republic, the incidence of Corovirus cases over seven days is 795 and 374 in Slovakia.

Austrian Health Minister Rudolf Anschober spoke of "alarming data." On Friday, however, the obligation to register online for those entering Austria will enter into force. (ANSA).
