Covid:more than 7 million cumulative cases in Eastern Europe

Over 140,000 deaths registered by now

(ANSA) - BELGRADE, DEC 22 - Cumulative cases in countries in Central- and Eastern Europe climbed to over 7 million since the beginning of the pandemic until December 20, according to data from the latest epidemiological update of the World Health Organization (WHO).

According to the WHO epidemiological update, a total of 615,418 new COVID-19 cases -2.6% compared to last week) and 16,577 new deaths (+10.1% week-on-week) were reported by the countries in the Balkans and in Central- and Eastern Europe to the World Health Organization (WHO) through December 20, bringing the cumulative total of cases to 7,388,510 and of deaths to 140,748.

According to WHO data, in the past week the countries across Central- and Eastern Europe that reported more new cases were Germany (173293), Poland (76000), Ukraine (70233), Czechia (45061), Romania (36044) and Serbia (35091).

The countries across the region that reported more new deaths last week were Germany (4262), Poland (2721), Ukraine (1431), Hungary (1134), Romania (1032) and Bulgaria (925). In Central- and Eastern Europe, the highest number of deaths from COVID-19 since the start of the pandemic were reported in Germany (26049), Poland (25397), Ukraine (16585), Romania (14296), Czechia (10331) and Hungary (8099).

Last week, Slovenia registered 1129 cumulative deaths per million population, compared to 1132 in Italy, followed by Bosnia-Herzegovina (1105), North Macedonia (1091) and Montenegro (997), while the lowest rate is observed in Estonia (131).

However, "for the ninth consecutive week, the number of cases and deaths increased in Estonia. Last week, while the number of new cases reported in Estonia increased by 27%, the number of new deaths increased by 18%," WHO said.

In Slovenia, Croatia, Bulgaria, Romania and in the Western Balkans (Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, Kosovo, North Macedonia, Albania) 1,704,167 confirmed cumulative cases (+134,959) and 37,840 deaths (+3,944) were registered as of December 20. (ANSA).
