More than 100,000 died in Central- Eastern Europe

(ANSA) - BELGRADE, DEC 9 - North Macedonia, Bosnia-Herzegovina and Montenegro are the countries in Central- and Eastern Europe with the highest cumulative deaths from the virus per million population, show data from the latest epidemiological update of the World Health Organization (WHO), updated as of December 6. More than 100,000 deaths were recorded in Central- and Eastern Europe since the beginning of the pandemic.

North Macedonia registered 912 cumulative deaths per million population, compared to 984 in Italy, followed by Bosnia-Herzegovina (891), Montenegro (841) and Czechia (823), while the lowest rate is observed in Estonia (95).

According to the WHO epidemiological update, a total of 625,891 new COVID-19 cases (-7.4% compared to last week) and 15,306 new deaths (+7.0% week-on-week) were reported by the countries in the Balkans and in Central- and Eastern Europe to the World Health Organization (WHO) through December 6, bringing the cumulative total of cases to 6,131,154 and of deaths to 108,538.

The countries across the region that reported more new deaths last week were Poland (3115), Germany (2649), Ukraine (1375), Hungary (1196), Romania (1141), Bulgaria (980) and Austria (852).

In Central- and Eastern Europe, the highest number of deaths from COVID-19 since the start of the pandemic were reported in Poland (19861), Germany (18772), Ukraine (13588), Romania (12186), Czechia (8815) and Hungary (5868).

According to WHO data, in the past week the countries across Central- and Eastern Europe that reported more new cases were Germany (128622), Ukraine (90627), Poland (80680), Serbia (50080), Romania (42363) and Hungary (38751).

In Slovenia, Croatia, Bulgaria, Romania and in the Western Balkans (Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, Kosovo, North Macedonia, Albania) 1,398,763 confirmed cumulative cases and 29,471 deaths were registered as of December 6. (ANSA).
