Slovenia: opposition fails referendum push

Vote seen by as vote of confidence in left-liberal government

28 November, 15:25
(ANSA) - BELGRADE, NOV 28 - Slovenia's ruling coalition has deflected a major challenge from the opposition, with voters confirming three laws in a referendum on November 27 that was seen by some as a vote of confidence in the left-liberal government, though one law is likely to undergo constitutional review, potentially delaying its entry into force even further, according to Slovenian news agency STA.

Despite being challenged by the Democrats (SDS) on the grounds that they were harmful, all three laws were overwhelmingly supported, most notably the law aimed at depoliticizing the national public broadcaster by putting civil society in charge of appointments to key management and supervisory bodies. Almost 63% of those who voted on Sunday were in favor. (ANSA).
