Bosnia:Lavrov in Sarajevo,25th anniversary of Dayton Accords

Russian foreign minister in talks with Bosnian leadership

14 December, 18:55
(ANSA) - SARAJEVO, 14 DIC - Russian Foreign Minister Serghei Lavrov paid a visit today to Bosnia-Herzegovina, on the very day of the 25th anniversary of the signing in Paris of the Dayton peace Accords that put an end to the war in Bosnia (1992-95). An outdated document that needs a reform of the Constitution to make the Bosnian state functional, in compliance with the Euro-Atlantic integration, the new US administration claims.

Moscow, however, strongly supports the Bosnian Serbs and Serbia, is opposed to Bosnia's accession to Nato, and to any modification of the Dayton Agreement that weakens autonomy of Republika Srpska (RS, Serb majority entity). Upon arrival in the Bosnian capital in the late afternoon, the Russian minister will first go to eastern Sarajevo, a suburb of the Bosnian capital, which is part of the RS, to meet the Bosnian Serb leadership. In the evening, an official meeting with the three exponents of the tripartite Presidency will take place. The Tripartite Presidency is made up of Serbian Milorad Dodik, the collegial body's rotating president, Croatian Zeljko Komsic, and Bosnian Sefik Dzaferovic. Bosnian foreign minister Bisera Turkovic will attend the meeting, too.

Ahead of Lavrov's visit to Sarajevo, Bosnian Serb leader Dodik went to Belgrade this morning to meet Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic. The police implemented exceptional security measures: some roads near the airport remained closed to traffic for several hours. The local authority asked the neighborhood population was asked to reduce movements as much as possible.

From Sarajevo, Lavrov will continue his mission across the Balkans, traveling to Belgrade and Zagreb tomorrow. (ANSA).
