Lithuania: Simonyte, coalition negotiation just started

Homeland Union secured 50 seats, alliance with liberals

(ANSA) - BELGRADE, 27 OTT - "The negotiation process has only just begun, it is clear that in order for it to be successful, we need to agree on the work to be done, then agree on the people who can do it. There is still time for this, because the elections have just ended," Ingrida Simonyte, former Finance minister and presumptive next prime minister of Lithuania, told Lithuanian television LRT on Monday evening.

Simonyte led the party list of the conservative Homeland Union, which secured 50 seats in the new parliament and should have a center-right majority of 74 seats out of 141 with two coalition liberal parties, both led by women, based on preliminary results, LRT previously informed. The ruling Lithuanian Peasants and Green Union party got 32 seats.

Talks are expected to take weeks and a new government may not be sworn in until December, AFP reported on Monday. (ANSA).
