17 November, 11:47 (ANSA) - BELGRADE, NOV 17 - According to estimates presented
in a new report released today by the European Centre for
Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC), more than 35,000 people
die in the EU/EEA each year from antimicrobial-resistant
infections. The report's estimated number of deaths examines the
years 2016-2020 and shows an increase over previous estimates.
Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) has a greater public health impact than influenza, tuberculosis, and HIV/AIDS combined.
Adjusted for population size, the overall burden of antibiotic-resistant bacteria infections was estimated to be highest in Greece, Italy, and Romania, according to the ECDC.
