After 78 years, claim for compensation for Nazi crimes

(ANSA) - TRIESTE, NOV 8 - After 78 years, Italian lawyer Andrea Sandra took legal action against the Federal Republic of Germany for war crimes and crimes against humanity committed by the Third Reich during World War II. Sandra filed a claim for compensation on behalf of the heirs of 21 victims, 15 reportedly protagonists of the massacre committed by the Nazi-Fascists between July 21 and 22, 1944, the killings in the Alta Valle del But (Udine).

The Messaggero Veneto daily newspaper reported, pointing out that the action also represents deportees to Nazi concentration camps. The legal basis for the claim is Decree-Law No. 36, then Law No. 79 (June 29, 2022). Article 43 establishes a fund at the Ministry of Economy and Finance for compensating crimes committed against Italian citizens by the forces of the Third Reich between Sept. 1, 1939, and May 8, 1945. The available fund amounts to 20 million euros for 2023 and 11,808,000 euros for each year between 2024 and 2026. (ANSA).
