(ANSA) - ROME, MAY 9 - Former Ryder Cup captain Jim Furyk, US
Open winner in 2003, has been named the third vice captain for
Team USA to face Team Europe in the first Ryder Cup to be staged
in Italy, at the Marco Simone Golf & Country Club at Guidonia
outside Rome on September 29-October 1 this year.
The 52-year-old from West Chester in Pennsylvania led the USA to
a heavy defeat in France in 2018 when the Europeans led by
Thomas Bjorn dominated the Americans, in large part thanks to
the exploits of Italy's Francesco 'Chicco' Molinari, the 2018
Open winner, who became the first European to win five points
from five matches.
This year's USA captain Zach Johnson had already named Steve
Stricker and Davis Love III as vice captains for the Rome event.
Jonson said of Furyk: "We've been friends for more than 20
years. He's an extraordinary leader, a mentor and I have blind
faith in him. I'll certainly rely on his experience". (ANSA).
