The response to the climate emergency
is of particular urgency and cannot wait, President Sergio
Mattarella said on Wednesday during a state visit to San Marino.
"Indeed, we look with serious concern at the climate emergency that is hitting our Mediterranean region with particular violence, with extreme weather phenomena that are seriously damaging our ecosystem and threatening our way of life," said Mattarella.
"Together with the presidents of the Mediterranean countries that are members of the Arraiolos Group, we have called for action so that urgent and effective steps are taken to halt and reverse the effects of the climate crisis," he continued.
On Europe, Mattarella recalled that "freedom and independence" are founding values of the European integration project, of which Italy is a founding member.
"European integration is a project that today looks to be even more indispensable in the face of global challenges - which individual countries are unable to face on their own - up to the dramatic return of war to Europe, with the barbaric aggression by the Russian Federation against Ukraine," said the head of state.
