Members of Italy's Last Generation (Ultima Generazione - UG) group staged another act of civil disobedience to highlight the need to tackle the climate crisis on Tuesday, when two protestors covered themselves in mud outside the Senate in Rome.
The mud was used as a link to last week's deadly floods in Emilia Romagna, which several experts have said is connected to an increase in the frequency and intensity of extreme-weather events because of the climate crisis caused by human greenhouse-gas emissions.
"The Emilia Romagna flood was a pre-announced disaster," said one of the protestors, a young woman who was topless.
"We bring the mud of politics to the palace of politics".
The protest was robustly halted by the police.
Sources said Carabinieri prevented some protestors from spraying liquid over the facade of the Senate building.
Three UG members are currently on trial in Rome for spraying easy-to-wash-off paint over the facade of the Senate in January.
