Macedonian PM Zaev urges EU to open negotiations in June

'EU leaders must take into account our work on key reforms'

(ANSA) - BRUSSELS, MAR 19 - Macedonian Prime Minister Zoran Zaev made today an appeal to the EU High Representative Federica Mogherini, and the Enlargement Commissioner Johannes Hahn to open membership negotiations with Skopje next June.

The European Union must "take into account the importance of our work on key reforms" in North Macedonia "and value our progress properly", Zaev said at the end of the Stabilization and Association Council between the EU and Northern Macedonia in Brussels.

"EU membership is our primary goal, we are convinced that we have strong arguments", stressed Zaev speaking to the press.

"Our membership in Nato is now almost certain, but it is also realistic to expect a positive decision from EU Council in June in order to open accession negotiations with EU", Macedonian PM pointed out.

Zaev recalled the work of his government on several reforms, including in the areas of justice and public administration. The country "made visible progress" on its alignment with European standards, he added, stressing that in North Macedonia "reforms do provide results".(ANSA).
