Italy-Austria: OBB, Trieste-Vienna railway line in 2026

CEO of Austrian railways, two 20km tunnels are ready

19 March, 11:47
(ANSA) - TRIESTE - ''In 2026 we could have a direct Trieste-Vienna railway line'', the CEO of the Austrian railways OBB, Andreas Mattha, announced on the sidelines of the signing of a memorandum of understanding with the Trieste Port Authority to implement the railway link between Trieste and central-eastern Europe.

''We are very interested in this project'', Mattha added, pointing out that the section would be covered ''in four hours'', and that two tunnels which are more than 20km long have already been ''built''. The OBB will not carry out the project alone but in collaboration with Italy's RFI and perhaps also with a private Italian partner, the manager of Udine-Cividale railway line. Now ''we have to prepare the agreements with the Friuli Venezia Giulia Region''. Mattha also spoke of a ''tourism project that is being discussed with the president of the Venezia Giulia Chamber of Commerce, Antonio Paoletti''. (ANSA).
