Romania: vulnerabilities impact the state of the economy

National Bank, demographics among the structural weaknesses

11 December, 17:56
(ANSA) - BELGRADE, DECEMBER 11 - The main vulnerabilities of the Romanian economy are currently the demographic dynamics, the low payment discipline and the low financial intermediation in the economic system, according to the new 'National Structural Vulnerabilities Map', presented by the National Bank of Romania (BNR), the specialized portal Business Review informed.

Those "structural weaknesses are long lasting and structural policy is needed to solve them," BNR vice governor Liviu Voinea said.

The demographic problem, common to almost all countries in Central- and Eastern Europe, is particularly strong in Romania, a country that lost approximately 14% of its population and more than 36% of the labour force in the last 15 years, because of people moving mostly to another EU country, the portal recalled.

Currently, according to official data made public last Spring by Eurostat, almost one out of five Romanians in working age are residing in another EU member state, the highest 'mobility' rate in the European Union. (ANSA).
