(ANSA) - BELGRADE - Serbia is doing 'goo job' on its path
towards EU accession, the reform process is going on, but
further efforts are needed, especially in the rule of law and
press freedom. That is what was the head of the EU delegation in
Belgrade, Italy's Sem Fabrizi, said in interviews released by
Ansa and Nova news agencies.
A year after his appointment, Fabrizi gave a positive
assessment of the European path of Serbia, which has opened 14
negotiating chapters out of 35 with Brussels so far. ''The
policy of enlargement to the Western Balkans - Fabrizi
underlined - despite a certain slowdown due to some important
issues affecting Europe (economy and finance, migrants,
terrorism), remains among the priorities of the EU.
In this regard, the Italian diplomat underlined the intense work
carried out in recent months during the Bulgarian presidency of
the Union. Serbia, said Fabrizi, should do more in the sectors
of the rule of law and freedom of expression, which are the real
pillars which the European Union is based on. ''There is
progress but we need to take further steps forward - he said -
and the Serbian government has committed itself to working on
those issues, and we are willing to make our contribution''.
As for the Kosovo issue, which is going to be the focus of a new
session of the EU-mediated dialogue between Belgrade and
Pristina today in Brussels, Fabrizi said he feels confident.
''Dialogue has already produced results and agreements that have
improved relations between the parties - said Fabrizi - and in
the last twelve months the negotiations have been intensified,
and we see that there is a willingness to reach a legally
binding agreement. Our role is to facilitate the agreement,
whose content must however be defined by the two parties
involved in the talks''.
