19 February, 14:03
(ANSA) - CIVIDALE DEL FRIULI (UDINE), FEBRUARY 19 - Common lines of thought in approaching the launch of satellites, the creation of new tools such as an open-source database to guarantee public access to the collected data, but also common objectives and collective support for research and new experiments and technologies to reduce the environmental pollution are the result of CFMUNESCO 2020, the simulation of the United Nations (MUN) debates organized by the National Boarding School 'Paolo Diacono' of Cividale del Friuli (Udine) and held at the institute's headquarters from 14 to 17 February.

The simulation, after three days of debate, ended with the Plenary Session of February 17 which was attended by over 200 students from high schools from all over Italy and abroad, who took on the role of UN delegates and discussed global socio-political current affairs, based on the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. In the end, a presentation of the works produced took place and awards were given to the delegates who distinguished themselves in the represented committees, who all shared the need to enhance the citizens' engagement in the activities related to space, first of all, projects with schools and universities. The more than two hundred delegates agreed on the best resolution produced during the conference, the result of the commitment of the UNOOSA committee on the role of space research in peacekeeping and international collaboration (Space4Peace), in connection with the UN 2030 Agenda's sustainable development goals. The best delegation award went to the students of the Gimnazija of Maribor, who represented Vietnam in the UNESCO, UNOOSA and Security Council committees.

Awards were also given to students from Italian schools (IIS Da Vinci of Padua), Australia (Queensland Department of Education) and Russia (School 1409 in Moscow). In line with the key issue of environmental sustainability that inspired the whole meeting, the organizing students also involved all the participants in the symbolic gesture of planting an oak in the Convitto park, to underline the connection between CFMUNESCO and the territory and for the symbolic value of strength and hope. "This sixth edition of CFMUNESCO was particularly interesting and engaging - said the Convitto Manager, Prof. Luca Gervasutti - both for the topics discussed and for the quality of the resolutions produced by the young delegates, focused on their determination to be protagonists of a radical change in society."(ANSA).
