Cancer: highest death rate in Hungary

(ANSA) - BELGRADE, FEBRUARY 4 - Hungary recorded the highest age-standardized death rate from cancer among the European Union Member States in 2016, new data from Eurostat show.

According to the EU statistical office, Hungary registered 345 deaths per 100,000 inhabitants, followed by Croatia (334), Slovakia (315) and Slovenia (309). High death rates from cancer were recorded also in Poland (297) and Latvia (295). Low death rates from cancer were recorded in contrast in Cyprus (194 deaths from cancer per 100,000 inhabitants), followed by Finland (220), Malta (221), Sweden (229) and Spain (230).

Across the EU, there were 257 deaths from cancer per 100,000 in 2016, Eurostat added. In 2016, almost 1.2 million persons died from cancer in the EU in 2016, with cancer responsible for 26% of all deaths recorded in the European Union. Lung cancer was the main fatal cancer form for men, breast cancer for women.
