(ANSA) - BELGRADE, 17 SET - The phenomenon of illegal logging is increasing in Romania, in the past one of the EU countries with the largest forest cover in Europe. According to data released recently by Greenpeace, a total of 12,487 cases of illegal logging were identified in Romania in 2017, a number that represents an increase of 32% compared to 2016. Every day, 34 cases of illegal logging were recorded in the country, Greenpeace added in a statement.

In 2017, Romania lost almost nine million euro (+5.2%) because of the damages of illegal logging, local media reported.

Greenpeace said in a report that in Romania the areas covered by forests fell in the 20th century, down to 28.95% at present, below the EU average of 43%. From 2000 to 2011, approximately 360,000 hectares become deforested or degraded, Greenpeace noted. (ANSA).
