Energy: Austria first in the EU for renewable sources

With 73% of the total consumed, only 7% in Hungary

(ANSA) - BELGRADE, SEPTEMBER 22 - Austria is the European Union country that produces more electricity from renewable sources, Eurostat said.

The EU statistical office data show that 73% of the electricity consumed in Austria in 2016 was generated by renewable sources. Sweden (65%), Portugal and Denmark (both 54%) and Latvia (51%) registered also a high percentage of electricity produced by 'clean' sources. In 2016, electricity generation from renewable sources contributed more than one quarter to total gross electricity consumption in the EU, Eurostat noted. Above the EU average also Slovenia (32.1%), Romania (42.7%) and Croatia (46.1%).

At the opposite, in four EU countries less than 10 % of the electricity consumed in 2016 came from renewable sources: Malta (6%), Luxembourg and Hungary (both 7%) and Cyprus (9%), Eurostat noted.

Outside from the EU, Albania (86%) and Montenegro (51%) registered a very high percentage of energy produces by renewable sources. In the EU, hydro power is the most important renewable source (36.9% of the total), followed by wind power (31.8%) and solar power (11.6%). (ANSA).
