Spring skiing on the Belluno Dolomites

Many events planned for the season's finale

BELLUNO ANSAcom

Winter is drawing to a close but skiing will be in full swing this spring on the Belluno Dolomites with plenty of snow for an end of season offering perfect slopes and plenty of events. Snowfalls over the past few days have extended the season by a few weeks for skiers and all those who love the breathtaking views of the Dolomites, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, with landscapes covered in snow and the colorful sunsets of March.

One of Europe's top skiing areas, the province of Belluno boasts hundreds of kilometers of ski slopes. Slopes will remain open until March 31 in Misurina and in the area of Civetta, except for Zoldo, which will be open until April 7, along with slopes in the Alpe Lusia-San Pellegrino and Arabba areas.

It will also be possible to ski until May on the Marmolada and in Cortina d'Ampezzo, on the slopes of Faloria. And several events have been planned to bid farewell to the winter season. On Friday, March 22, the wine and food event 'Alto Gusto' in Cortina d'Ampezzo will be a treat for gourmets while romantic visitors will have the opportunity of hiking in the moonlight in the area of Comelico. The ''Alleghe Family Winter Day'' giant slalom scheduled on March 23 has been organized to raise funds for the Padua-based foundation ''Città della Speranza'' with skiing champion Deborah Compagnoni as a special promoter. Ice-cream lovers, children in particular, on Sunday, March 24, will have the opportunity of celebrating the ''European Artisanal Gelato Day'' in Zoldo.

The ''Wine & Ski Safari'' in Arabba will instead be a glamorous event for adults who will have the opportunity of savoring excellent wines in a mountain lodge. The Italian women's skiing championship 'Campionati italiani assoluti femminili' will be held on the new slope 'La volata' at the Passo San Pellegrino on March 25-30. The last weekend of the season will offer two special events for skiers. Cross-country skiers, downhill skiers and hikers will be able to compete on Saturday, April 6 in Misurina in the ''Staffetta Alpina'' (Alpine relay race) which will award athletes for their speed as well as the originality of their attire.

''Marmolada a tutta'' on Sunday, April 7 in Rocca Pietore will be a hike with climbing irons and snowshoes until Malga Ciapela along the Bellunese, the longest slope of the Dolomiti Superski resort (12-kilometer-long). And for some pure fun, the ''Alleghe Splash Party'' on Sunday, March 31, will give courageous competitors the opportunity of crossing a 30-meter-ling icy swimming pool with their skis or by any other means contrived for the occasion.
