The government is hoping for a "private solution" for Carige, the bailed out Genoa lender now seeking a partner, Economy Minister Giovanni Tria said Thursday.
"The government is hoping for a private solution to the crisis that will enable (the bank) to definitively overcome its current difficulties," he said.
Tria also said the government had notified the EU of Carige's request for a State guarantee on new bond issues.
The minister also said talk of nationalisation was "improper".
He said "the precautionary recapitalisation is temporary and talk of nationalisation is improper".
